Project Seagrass is a global facing environmental charity devoted to the conservation of seagrass ecosystems through:
We guide stakeholders in the use of standardised scientific
methodologies and build capacity in others for seagrass action across the world through an
extensive network of partners.
We lead and support scientific research that supports conservation
and restoration actions that facilitate net gain and the long-term resilience of seagrass
ecosystems.
We promote and assist with long-term monitoring of seagrass condition,
and act to protect and restore seagrass meadows globally. We support external
organisations on the ground with technical advice and capacity building through training
and knowledge exchange.
We are global leaders that champion seagrass conservation research and
action. We engage society and regulators with seagrass ecosystems, the value they hold, and
current seagrass management issues.
Our Vision: A world in which seagrass meadows are thriving, abundant and well managed for people and planet.
Our Mission: To lead societal change to enable the recognition, recovery and resilience of seagrass ecosystems globally; that provide biodiversity, equitable and sustainable livelihoods, and planetary life support.
Project Seagrass was created with the intention of reversing the loss of seagrass by turning research into effective conservation action and communication through partnerships with local communities and other stakeholders.
If our journey as an organisation has taught us anything, it is that achieving our mission begins with how we build our team and how we work together.
Saving the world’s seagrass requires generating new knowledge and sharing it among scientists and decision-makers to support learning and enable evidence-based decision-making. We lead, champion and communicate cutting-edge scientific research which underpins everything we do.
Only by working together can we save the world’s seagrass. We work with governments, NGOs, businesses, communities and change makers to conduct participatory science and deliver collaborative action.
The knowledge and passion to conserve seagrass exist globally, but the resources needed to put this knowledge and passion to action are not equitably distributed. Only by enhancing equity, and giving others space and opportunity to make change, can we save the world’s seagrass. We provide tailored support that is both adaptive and transformative to enable others to save the world’s seagrass, whether that’s with capacity, engagement, learning or resources.
Remaining optimistic in the face of the biodiversity and climate crises is not only essential to saving the world’s seagrass, but for our team’s own mental well-being. We carry a positive and optimistic approach into all of our work. That optimism allows us to learn from failure and setbacks to grow as an organisation and improve seagrass conservation.
Everything we do is driven by our desire to make the world a better place for generations to come. Saving seagrass is key to achieving this goal. To save the world’s seagrass, we need to have a collective passion and drive to understand seagrass and work to conserve it. Our passion is a testimony of our engagement and dedication to saving the world’s seagrass.
Project Seagrass is an international organisation working across the globe to save seagrass.
Protecting and restoring seagrass meadows contributes to the solutions to many global problems such as food insecurity, water quality, wellbeing, and gender equality, as well as the more well known issues of biodiversity loss and climate change.
Saving seagrass requires a holistic approach of action at local, regional and global scales.
