The Global Seagrass Challenge Fund
A global challenge, shaped by local action
Supporting people-centred seagrass conservation for a healthier ocean and a fairer future
The Global Seagrass Challenge Fund is a collaborative, co-developed initiative that supports locally led research and action to secure a future for seagrass meadows worldwide.
Working alongside partners, we increase awareness of seagrass ecosystems, share knowledge, and strengthen collective action. Through equitable access to technical support and funding, we support research, management, conservation, and education that respond to local priorities and contexts.
Joining the Global Seagrass Challenge Fund as a supporter helps unlock opportunity, strengthen community leadership, and mobilise action for seagrass conservation across the globe.
Scientists have identified six interconnected global challenges, six priorities that need to be addressed to safeguard seagrass meadows now and into the future. The Global Seagrass Challenge Fund exists to respond to these challenges.
The Fund operates through a people-centred, evidence-informed approach that prioritises equity, local knowledge, and collaboration. By supporting individuals, communities and organisations to lead action locally, we aim to enhance biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and support livelihoods and well-being.
At its core, the Global Seagrass Challenge Fund directs funding and technical support to initiatives that protect, conserve, and restore seagrass. Our work is guided by our values of being science-led, equitable, optimistic, passionate and collaborative.

Project Seagrass allocates funding from the Global Seagrass Challenge Fund using a structured trust-based grant making model. Partnerships emerge through open application calls, partner identification by Project Seagrass through active research, networking and recommendations from other partners. The selection process prioritises value and goal alignment rather than exclusively employing conventional selection standards.
Our selection process focuses on some primary themes which include: seagrass ecosystems and their associated ecosystem services, locally and Indigenous-led partnerships, partners that struggle to obtain mainstream funding and support, partners that share aligned goals and have the potential for meaningful impact in their context and in seagrass conservation. Initially, priority will be given to partners in Tropical Atlantic, Western Indo-Pacific, Central Indo-Pacific, and Tropical Eastern Indo-Pacific marine ecoregions.
These regions have been chosen for their global significance to seagrass conservation, spanning biodiversity hotspots, areas of rapid decline, and regions where seagrass supports climate-vulnerable communities and food security. These align with Project Seagrass’s regional experience, established partnerships, and clear opportunities to address critical knowledge gaps while delivering meaningful impact.
Alongside understanding the work potential partners wish to undertake, due diligence assessments form part of the selection process. Allocation of support is realised through three distinct pathways, dependant on the needs and wants of each partner organisation.

We work collaboratively with local partners to design robust reporting systems that are sensitive to a variety of capacities. We encourage applications and expressions of interest irrespective of size, scale and current capacity.
The sky’s the limit, but donations of all levels will support the Global Seagrass Challenge Fund which addresses the major challenges facing seagrass ecosystems around the world. Any annual donation commitments of £1,000 or more are required for you to become a Global Seagrass Challenge Fund supporter.
