Project Seagrass

There has never been a more urgent need to restore damaged ecosystems than now.

Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems in every continent and in every ocean to help end poverty, fight climate change and prevent mass extinctions. It is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems across the world. Healthy ecosystems enhance peoples livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop biodiversity collapse. It will only succeed if everyone plays a part. Find out more about ecosystems and the UN Decade, and join the global movement to restore our world.

Access the UN Decade Hub here.

The Decade runs from 2021 through to 2030. This is the timeline scientists have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change. It is also the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. At Project Seagrass, we will be working towards achieving the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Sustainable Development Goals.

By 2030 we have set the ambitious target of facilitating the planting 30km2 of seagrass in the UK and to expand our global efforts.

We have big plans for the next 10 years… stay tuned and follow #GenerationRestoration

We’re promoting inclusivity and sustainability in industry, working towards Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Seagrass meadows make significant food and economic security contributions to coastal communities. We’re working to safeguard these contributions for Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

Seagrass protects coastal communities and improves air quality, contributing to Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

We encourage the sustainable use and management of seagrass for Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Seagrass sequesters carbon and strengthens resilience to natural disasters for Goal 13: Climate Action

We are creating the first ever full scale seagrass restoration project in the UK, doing our best for Goal 14: Life Below Water

Conserving seagrass demands working together. That’s why we believe strongly in
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
