Ryan Mathews

Marine Technician

Ryan is a multidisciplinary field scientist who has worked in a broad range of habitats and regions extending from the tropics to Antarctica.

Ryan looks after the diving programme and the marine technology we have here at Project Seagrass which includes ROV’s and USVs.

Ryan brings with him a wealth of experience having worked in fisheries research, MPA management, environmental consultancy, and climate change research. His practical skills have been refined from working within the intertidal zone, shallow water subtidal off small RIBs and large offshore survey vessels, and a short stint working in the Australian outback.

He has previously planned and conducted surveys using a range of survey equipment including drop down cameras and ROV’s to map biodiversity, sidescan and multibeam sensors to map habitats and grabs, cores or SCUBA methods to collect samples.

After spending an extensive amount of time in Antarctica as a scientific SCUBA diver collecting specimens, samples, deploying equipment amongst many other tasks, Ryan has now relocated to Wales to enjoy the warm and sunny (sometimes) weather.
