Dr Elizabeth Lacey

Senior Science Officer & Scotland Team Lead

Elizabeth Lacey brings over 15 years of experience in seagrass science, conservation, and community engagement to her role as Senior Science Officer and Scotland Team Lead at Project Seagrass. A marine ecologist and former university professor, she has led numerous restoration and monitoring initiatives across temperate regions, with a strong focus on translating science into action.

Prior to joining Project Seagrass, Elizabeth served as Principal Investigator of her own research lab in New Jersey, USA, where she developed and led large-scale seagrass research, restoration, and mapping projects. She co-founded the East Coast SAV Collaborative, a 75+ member network uniting seagrass researchers and practitioners to promote collaboration and shared learning.  She excels at building cross-sector partnerships and communicating science to diverse audiences—from policymakers to community members. Her commitment to inclusive science and stakeholder engagement aligns closely with Project Seagrass’s mission to restore and protect seagrass ecosystems through collaborative, community-led action.

Now based in Scotland, Elizabeth leads regional efforts to advance evidence-based seagrass restoration, research, and outreach while supporting the organisation’s global conservation goals.
