Seagrasses: One of Our Best Defences Against Climate Change

Seagrasses absorb and store carbon 35 times more efficiently than rainforests. Seagrass degradation may account for a proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions. In recognition of this fact, the historic United Nations Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 emphasises the critical importance of conserving seagrasses and other Blue Carbon ecosystems.

Agriculture, Aquaculture, Seagrass and Climate Change

Agriculture drives 80% of tropical deforestation. Farming causes ~15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is one of the greatest threats to seagrass, releasing vast amounts of nutrients, pollutants and fertilisers into our coastal ecosystems. Feeding 9.8 billion people by 2050 without destroying seagrass and overwhelming the planet is one of the most urgent challenges of our time.
